The Cubs' new Theocracy
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
Observations, insinuations, ruminations and unvarnished opinions . . . AS THE PHILLIES tiptoe into what promises to be a daunting offseason of adding and subtracting, healing bodies and mending fences, one pervasive fear seems to be gripping the fans. Manager-in-waiting Ryne Sandberg will be managing somebody's big-league ballclub in 2012. And it will not be this one. Many of you immediately concluded that Sandberg was gone the minute former Red Sox child prodigy Theo Epstein was hired to use his big Harvard brain to awaken the Chicago Cubs from 103 years of stony sleep.

Remember: I didn't say what I just said
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
As political alliances go, St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster and Pinellas County Commission Chairwoman Susan Latvala could be on their way to becoming the Bickersons of Tampa Bay. Latvala was all too happy to toss Foster under the bus the other day. But then again hizzoner already had helped her along by taking the first step off the curb. According to Latvala, it seems the mayor was channeling his inner Chatty Kathy when he called the commissioner for a little confabulation and suggested the Tampa Bay Rays might be purposefully suppressing their attendance figures out at the Quonset Hut in order to bolster the team's argument it needs a new ballpark.

Wilken a happy camper;Incumbent scouting director says McLeod's hiring 'brought a smile to my face'
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
The Cubs executive who might have the most right to feel threatened by the latest round of hirings in the team's top baseball offices sounds a lot more encouraged than anything else. Maybe that's because Tim Wilken knows new baseball president Theo Epstein's history - and plans - for putting financial and intellectual resources into scouting and player development. Maybe it's even more about how well Wilken, the Cubs' incumbent scouting director, knows the new scouting executive Epstein just hired: Jason McLeod, who now oversees both scouting and player development.

Beating Phils in May was key for Rangers
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
ST. LOUIS - You already know how integral the Phillies were to the Cardinals' making their unlikely run into this year's World Series. After swatting away all contenders, including three of four in Milwaukee, the Phillies lost three of four to the Cardinals at home in mid-September. Then there was their sweep of Braves at season's end, which allowed baseball hottest team to replace its coldest team and well . . . you know the rest. Or do you? Before last night's Game 6 of the World Series, Texas manager Ron Washington was asked whether there was a key turnaround moment for his team this season. And wouldn't you know it, it involved your Phillies .

GAME 6 | RANGERS at CARDINALS;Returning to the flock;Old Sox always find their way home, so why not
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
ST. LOUIS - One way or another, old White Sox always find their way back to the South Side. No one saw it coming, but Robin Ventura did it. Frank Thomas - against enormous odds after being called an ''idiot'' by general manager Ken Williams - did it. Maybe Ozzie Guillen will do it someday.

King for a Jay (or five)?
Fri October 28, 2011 2:29 am
From Richard Griffin's blog: Q. The three following pitchers should be considered by Alex Anthopoulos for the No. 2 pitcher in the Blue Jays rotation: Felix Hernandez, Ervin Santana or Dan Haren. All three are No. 1- or No. 2-quality pitchers. Granted, Hernandez will be expensive, but that team needs positional players - catcher, first baseman, outfielder and a high-prospect pitcher. I believe one of the California pitchers is a better possibility. Your thoughts?
